Mattress Construction: What’s Under Those Covers?
Sealy
Sealy does not publish detailed construction information on its website, but here’s what we do know about the Sealy Olympia Geltex.
The Sealy has a micro-quilted top cover. The mattress also sports Tencel lyocell fibres. These silky-feel fibres can help to wick away moisture and help to keep you cooler during the night.
The mattress also contains Purotex. This means there are microcapsules within the mattress that contain probiotics. When you sleep on the mattress these microcapsules split and the probiotics get to work fighting allergens.
For this reason, Allergy UK has certified this Sealy range for reducing house dust mites.
The Sealy also has a 4cm layer of Sealy’s gel foam, Geltex. This gel-infused foam gives the comforting feel of memory foam but can help to keep you cool throughout the night. Gel foam can also help spread your weight to reduce pressure points.
The Sealy Olympia Geltex has a layer of pocket springs, with the King Size offering 1000 pocket springs in total. These springs can give you support while also improving your ability to move freely.
The Sealy Olympia Geltex is a Posturepedic mattress. Sealy designed this mattress with zoned support based on how it can help improve your sleeping posture, keep your spine healthy, and deliver better pressure point relief.
The Sealy Olympia Geltex is a single-sided mattress.
Eve
The Eve Premium Hybrid has several layers, each designed with different features in mind.
The top cover is quilted and can be removed and washed, helping to keep your sleep surface fresh and healthy. What’s more, this cover uses strands of silver and silver’s antimicrobial properties to keep your mattress even healthier.
The next layer is Eve’s “floatfoam” layer, which is made with softness in mind. The next layer is a memory foam layer to give you that body contouring pressure relief that many crave from their memory foam mattress. Both of these layers contain graphite, which draws heat away from your body.
Next up is a foam support layer and then another layer of foam with edge support to help you use the full surface of the mattress. These layers also help to “case” the spring layer.
Eve’s Premium Hybrid has more than 1500 pocket springs. These 12cm springs are there to give you the ability to move on the mattress while offering tailored support to different areas of your body. The springs may also help to circulate air in the mattress.
The last of the major layers is a base that keeps everything where it should be and ensures the Premium Hybrid stays put on your bed base.
The Eve Premium Hybrid is a single-sided mattress, meaning you shouldn’t flip it over.
Thickness
The Sealy Olympia Geltex is 30cm deep.
The Eve Premium Hybrid is a little smaller at 28cm deep.
It’s always a good idea to make sure your bed base and any existing sheets will fit your new mattress as, while these are not unusual sizes, they are toward the upper end of the usual size range.
Firmness
The Sealy Olympia Geltex is a medium-firm mattress.
The Eve Premium Hybrid is also a medium-firm mattress.
Medium-firm mattresses are generally a good fit for most people and can suit most sleep styles.
Edge Support
Sealy
The use of high-quality springs and Geltex may help to provide a consistent, tailored sleep surface but Sealy does not publish detailed information on what is inside its mattresses so we cannot make a firm assessment.
Eve
The Eve Premium Hybrid contains layers of high-quality foam and springs. It also has a foam casing layer that includes side support intended so you can use the very limits of the mattress without rolling off.
Motion Transfer
Sealy
Sealy does not offer easy to access information on its mattresses. As a result, assessing how much movement you might feel is difficult.
Eve
Quality foam mattresses tend to have low motion transfer. While the introduction of pocket springs can slightly increase how much motion you feel on the sleep surface, Eve has purposefully incorporated layers of foam in its design to “isolate” motion transfer.
Breathability & Temperature
Sealy
Sealy uses a 4cm layer of Geltex in its mattress which is a gel-infused foam. The gel is there to pull heat away from your body when you lie on the mattress. Gel-infused mattresses may provide a cooler sleeping experience, particularly within the first few hours of your sleep.
The Sealy also has Tencel fibres in its design. These biodegradable fibres are soft and also draw in moisture. This may improve your sleep experience if you find you sweat a lot during the night.
Lastly, the addition of a pocket spring layer in this mattress may help to circulate air and keep you feeling fresh.
Eve
The Eve Premium Hybrid contains two layers of foam infused with graphite. By incorporating graphite, the Eve mattress may draw away heat to help you sleep cooler throughout the night.
The mattress also has a layer of pocket springs to give extra responsiveness and support to different areas of your body. The added benefit of a spring layer is that it may also help circulate air in the mattress to keep you feeling fresh.
Overall Mattress Comparison & Review: Sealy vs Eve
Both the Sealy Olympia Geltex and the Eve Premium Hybrid offer features to keep you cool while you sleep. They also provide spring layers to make their mattresses more responsive.
Where Sealy and Eve differ is in their emphasis. Eve has created a plush mattress made of layers of quality foam and full-sized springs to suit most sleepers and their sleeping styles.
Sealy caters more narrowly. With its Posturepedic zone support and Geltex pressure-relieving surface, Sealy is targeting people interested in their back health. It also emphasizes a fresh and healthy sleep environment with Purotex probiotic technology to reduce household dust mites.
With those differences in mind, let’s look at a few other comparisons.
Prices and Sizes
Size (Width x Length) | Sealy Olympia Geltex Mattress
(30cm) |
Eve Premium Hybrid
(28cm) |
Single (90 x 190cm) | £509.00 | x |
Double (135 x 190cm) | £679.00 | £978 |
King (150 x 200cm) | £713.00 | £1,128 |
Super King (180 x 200cm) | £959.00 | £1,247 |
Prices are correct as of 20/04/2021. Prices for the Eve Premium Hybrid are from the Eve website. Prices for the Sealy Olympia Geltex are taken from one retailer and are a general guide. Prices may vary.
We see a couple of significant differences here. The Sealy Olympia Geltex offers a Single while the Eve does not. Even when we look at the Double size, the price of the Sealy is just short of £300 less.
However, the Sealy does not come with a sleep trial, and the guarantee Sealy offers is shorter. Your investment in the Sealy may not last as long as it would with the Eve, which is something to keep in mind.
Delivery
Both Eve and Sealy offer free standard delivery, but you may find extra value in their additional services.
Sealy
Sealy has a presence in high street stores and so if you order through a local store your delivery will be based on their policies and time scales.
In some circumstances, Sealy does deliver directly. Sealy offers a two-person delivery service to your house. The team can take your mattress up to your bedroom and help set it up. Covid-19 restrictions may mean this service is altered depending on government advice.
Sealy offers free standard delivery to most postcodes in England, Scotland and Wales, and deliveries are usually Monday to Friday. Additional wait times or fees may apply if your address falls outside of Sealy’s standard delivery areas.
Standard delivery times may be as low as 14 days up to 28 days or more.
Eve
Eve offers free delivery to most postcodes in mainland UK. If you fall outside of its service area you may have to pay an additional fee, but this will be made clear when you reach the checkout process.
Standard delivery means Eve’s couriers will deliver to the main entrance of your building.
Eve is also offering a “no-contact” service meaning deliveries can be made without you having to sign for them.
Eve also offers nominated day delivery where you can choose what day your mattress will arrive. This service is available for £15. You will be able to see if this service is available when you buy your mattress.
Eve also offers a mattress removal service alongside the delivery of a new mattress. This service is £40. In this case, a two-person team can come to your bedroom to drop off the new mattress and take away your old mattress.
Returns
Eve and Sealy differ significantly on the length of time they allow for returns.
Sealy
Sealy offers a 14-day returns policy on its mattresses. If your mattress arrives damaged, the website advises you to contact Sealy’s customer service team as soon as possible.
Once the return is picked up and processed, you will be offered a full refund or store credit.
Eve
Eve offers a 100-night sleep trial on its mattresses. If you would like to return your mattress under this trial, you can fill out a form to start the process. Once your mattress has been collected you will be offered a full refund. Under normal circumstances, this can take up to 14 days depending on your payment method.
Returns relating to a problem with your mattress that you believe fall under the 10-year warranty can be started using a different form.
Sleep Trial
Sealy
Sealy does not offer a sleep trial on the Olympia Geltex mattress. The mattress or similar mattresses may be available in a store near you so you can at least look at the finish and get a quick impression of the comfort level.
The lack of a sleep trial on this mattress may be a significant drawback for some buyers.
Eve
There is a 100-night sleep trial on the Eve Premium Hybrid meaning that, after your new mattress is delivered, you have 100 nights to try it in your own home.
If you find that the experience isn’t everything you hoped it would be, you can get in touch with Eve’s customer care team and they will come and collect your mattress and refund your money. Eve does say you should give yourself about 30 days to adjust to your new mattress before making up your mind.
There are longer sleep trials on the market, such as the excellent Nectar 365-night sleep trial.
While 100 nights will not allow you to see what this mattress will be like across seasons, it does offer a good chance to get to know the mattress and if it fits your sleep needs.
Warranty
Sealy
Sealy offers a five-year guarantee on its Olympia Geltex mattress.
The guarantee means that subject to terms and conditions, Sealy will repair or replace your mattress if it develops a fault that is because of a problem with the material or with the manufacturing process.
The guarantee does not cover problems caused as a result of misuse, mishandling or failure to care for the mattress properly by, for example, placing it on a suitable base.
Also, you are not covered if the mattress is in an unsanitary condition.
If you purchased your mattress directly through Sealy you can contact Sealy to start your claim under this guarantee.
If you bought your mattress through another retailer you must begin your claim by going through the retailer’s procedures.
Eve
Eve offers a 10-year guarantee on the Eve Premium Hybrid.
The guarantee covers material or manufacturing faults, for example, the stitching on the mattress coming apart. It also covers spring failures or the mattress sagging if this leads to dips in the mattress greater than 2.5cm.
The guarantee does not cover using the mattress on an unsuitable bed frame. You are also not covered for things like if your mattress has not been maintained properly, or if the fault is a result of mishandling or misuse. You are also not covered for perceived loss of comfort.
Eve has a dedicated form to start the warranty claims process and the customer care team will guide you through what information and pictures you will need to provide for a valid claim.
Final Thoughts
Both Sealy and Eve offer some great features. Your choice between them depends on your budget and what you are looking for in a mattress.
The Sealy Olympia Geltex may cost significantly less, so if you’re on a budget this may be a good option. The Olympia Geltex is made to give you extra back support, help you sleep cooler during the night, and provide a clean and healthy sleeping environment, so it may be a contender if you have allergies or back pain issues.
The Eve Premium Hybrid offers layers of foam comfort with graphite cooling. A sleep trial and an extended 10-year warranty also mean you can try this mattress knowing you are covered if you find a problem. While the Eve costs more than the Sealy, you may feel your investment will go further.
So in the choice between Sealy vs Eve, who is the winner? Well, you are. And that’s how you should choose your new mattress: Which of these two mattresses you believe will offer you the best value and best features for your money.
